XTree Gold 4.0 for Windows SUPPORT FOR WINDOWS 95 XTree Gold 4.0 for Windows is compatible with Windows 3.1x, Windows for Workgroups 3.1x, and Windows 95. No other operating systems are certified by Symantec as compatible with XTree Gold 4.0 for Windows. We provide this information to help you make the most of running XTree Gold 4.0 for Windows under Windows 95. This document includes all the information we have available on running XTree Gold 4.0 for Windows under Windows 95. XTree Gold 4.0 for Windows and Windows 95 XTree Gold 4.0 for Windows was developed with built-in compatibility for Windows 95. However, XTree Gold 4.0 for Windows was released while Windows 95 was still in development and as Windows 95 has evolved, some changes have occurred in the operating system that have required a program patch to be issued for XTree Gold 4.0 for Windows. Information about the program patch and its availability is later in this document. It is possible to use most of the functions within XTree Gold 4.0 for Windows as a 16-bit applications under Windows 95, but do not run the advanced disk functions for undeleting files or formatting disks with "make bootable" enabled. NOTE: The Norton Navigator for Windows 95 is available from both Symantec Customer Service and most computer software retail outlets. A special trade-up version is available to owners of XTree Gold 4.0 for Windows at a reduced price. Installation issues XTree Gold 4.0 for Windows installs with no problems using Windows 95 installation tools. Program limitations With the exceptions of the following, all functions in XTree Gold 4.0 for Windows work as documented without limitations: * Make System Disk * Format Disk (with make disk bootable enabled) * Undelete Support * File Companions * Dragging files to the Windows 95 desktop Additionally, as Windows 95 has evolved, some functions that worked when XTree Gold 4.0 for Windows was first released no longer function correctly. A program patch has been released to correct problems related to copying files from a NetWare server with resulting invalid file sizes, and a problem that occurred when pressing the Page Down key in the file viewer. You must use the standard 8+3 naming convention. However, copying and moving files with existing long file names does work. To display long file names in XTree Gold 4.0 for Windows under Windows 95, follow these steps: 1 Pull down the View menu. 2 Select File Details/Custom. 3 Select Long Descriptions. An additional column named Long Description is added to the file pane where the Windows 95 Long File Name information appears. Universal Naming Convention (UNC) usage XTree Gold 4.0 for Windows is not aware of Universal Naming Conventions used in Windows 95. To see files on network volumes, it is necessary to map to a drive letter. Remember that XTree Gold 4.0 for Windows was designed to be compatible with Windows 95, but not Windows 95 compliant. You may experience problems other than those outlined in this document.
