[ATTRIBUTES] A Show/modify attributes for highlighted file CTRL+A Show/modify attributes for tagged files This command allows you to modify the attributes of one or more files including READ ONLY, ARCHIVE, SYSTEM, HIDDEN and time and date attributes. CAUTION: System and Hidden files are usually that way for a good reason so don't go changing these attributes if your not sure. If a single file is selected, QD3 displays a CRC checksum for the file. If a sub-directory is selected, QD3 add's up all the files in the directory including sub-directories and displays the total bytes used. #Display Attributes,DISPLAY ATTRIBUTES [DISPLAY ATTRIBUTES] ALT+A Display attributes in place of time This command displays the attributes files in the current window in place of the time in full screen mode. The display is shown as RASH. ( see above ) and cannot be seen when the keyboard commands or menu hotkeys are displayed. #See Information,INFORMATION [BACKGROUND SCREEN] B Show background/DOS screen. Often, when you execute a program or command line, QD3 returns to the screen before you've had a chance to read what was displayed beforehand. If this happens, simple press B to display the background screen. If this happens frequently you can enabled the Pause After Execution option in the General Options section of configuration. This will cause QD3 to pause after executing any program or command line. #See Configuration,PAUSE AFTER EXECUTION [BATCH FILES] CTRL+B Create batch file from tagged files. This command is very useful for performing bulk operations such as file conversions. Simply tag the files you wish to work with, press CTRL+B, enter the command line that you would use for a single file using %F in place of the filename. Press ENTER and type in a filename for the batch file. QD3 will then create the batch file which you can look at first to check it then run it like any other batch file. If you call the batch file QDBATCH.BAT which is the default name, the file will run straight away before you get a change to view it. Note: If you are working on a read-only device such as a CDROM, you will have to enter an alternate path along with the batch filename such as: C:\TEMP\MYFILE.BAT QD3 will not create this sub-directory either so make sure it's one that exists already. Under Windows 95 you can use %W parameter for long filenames. [COPYING FILES] C Copy highlighted file CTRL+C Copy tagged files M Move highlighted file CTRL+M Move tagged files When copying, QD3's default target directory is whatever the other window is in. You are given the option of changing the target directory and the target filespec to perform a 'Copy As' QD3 accepts standard DOS wildcards, examples of acceptable target directories are: C: Current directory on drive C D:\ Root directory on drive D C:\TEMP\*.* Specific directory as *.* *.bak Current directory as *.bak *.?xt Current directory as *.?xt A user definable picklist of path's to copy to is available by pressing the UP arrow. The copy routine works for both files and directories in the same way and can be configured in one of three modes. #See Configuration,COPY OPTIONS [DELETING FILES] DEL or D Delete highlighted file CTRL+DEL or CTRL+D Delete tagged files [EDITING FILES] E Edit highlighted file ALT+E Setup edit command CTRL+E Edit tagged files CTRL+ALT+E Edit new file Any suitable editing utility can be setup. The default editor is EDIT which is provided with DOS 5 and above. Example edit command: C:\DOS\EDIT %F Note: Tagged file editing only works with Windows 95 EDIT [FILESPEC] ALT+D Toggle filespec *.* or BAT/COM/EXE F Set filespec for current window ALT+F Set filespec for other window Setting the filespec for a window filters out unwanted files displaying only those specified. This useful when a directory contains a large number of files ( more than a few hundred ) as it reduces the number of files QD3 has to re-read every time you do something. A user definable picklist of filespecs is available by pressing the UP arrow. [FORMAT] CTRL+F Format floppy disk This function uses a user definable format command to format a floppy disk. The main benefit is that, once setup, the user doesn't need to remember complicated format command lines. [GOTO] G Goto directory using QDTree The GOTO command is an extremly fast way to get to any directory on any drive. You simply type in the first few character of the directory name and press ENTER. QD3 will produce a list of matching paths for you to select from. If only one match is found, QD3 will change to it immediatly. ALT+G Rescan all drives This must be done occasionally to update the tree files used by the GOTO command above. [GLOBAL] CTRL+G Global file search. This command will search through your entire system and compile a list of files matching a given filespec. You can then copy, move, rename or delete files from the list. Note that the list is automatically re-scanned after any of the above operations are carried out. You can select which drives are to be searched including CDROM's. Note that searching an entire CDROM disk can take some time. A useful application of this command is for deleting .TMP files. [INFORMATION] The information command (I) toggles the QD3 display mode between one of the three settings below: 1. Information Displays two directory windows with essential commands listed in the centre. 2. Commands Displays two directory windows and a centre command list which changes when the CTRL, ALT or SHIFT keys are held down to show their respective combination commands. 3. Menu HotKeys Displays two directory windows and a centre menu hotkey list which changes when the CTRL, ALT or SHIFT keys are held down to show their respective combination hotkeys. 4. Full Screen mode Displays two full screen directory windows including file dates and times or file dates and attributes. [SYSTEM INFORMATION] ALT+I Displays various system information. #DISK INFORMATION,DISK INFORMATION #HARDWARE INFORMATION,HARDWARE INFORMATION #SOFTWARE INFORMATION,SOFTWARE INFORMATION #CONFIGURATION INFORMATION,CONFIGURATION INFORMATION #TIME AND DATE,TIME AND DATE [DISK INFORMATION] Displays information about your drives including total capacity, bytes available, bytes used. Press ENTER on a drive to display volume label, serial number etc. Note, there must be a disk in the drive. [HARDWARE INFORMATION] Displays information about your hardware including CPU type, extended memory, expanded memory, serial ports etc. [SOFTWARE INFORMATION] Displays information about your software including DOS version, SMARTDRV version, mouse driver etc [CONFIGURATION INFORMATION] Displays information about your configuration including PATH and environment settings. [TIME AND DATE] Use the up and down arrows to move between the year, month, day, hours, minutes and seconds. Use the left and right arrows to change values. Press ESCape to exit. [COMPARING FILES] This feature compares directory windows and tags selected files based on the following. K Compares file lists and tags: - Unique files = A file that exists in one window only - Common files = A file that exists in both windows The following compares common files and tags: - Newer files = One file has a newer date/time - Older files = One file has an older date/time - Larger files = One file size is larger - Smaller files = One file size is smaller - Newer or larger - Unique, newer or larger Note: Normally QD3 compares both files lists except when looking for common files. If you are dealing with large directories, you may wish to comapre only one window at a time. To do this, select the required compare method and press F10 instead of ENTER. #Tagging Dupplicate Files,TAGGING DUPLICATE FILES [TAGGING DUPLICATE FILES] CTRL+K tags duplicate files in the current window. This command compares all files in the current window and tags duplicate files with the same size, time and date. When duplicate files are found, the first file is left un-tagged and the rest are tagged. This is a very effective way of removing duplicate files but should be used with caution as it is possible for two completely different files to have the same size, date and time. [LOGGING DRIVES] L Log current window. ( Change drive ) ALT+L Log other window. When logging a drive, QD3 detects all available drives including multiple CDROM's and networked drives. To connect to a networked drive under Windows 95 press INS to connect or DEL to dis-connect. [VOLUME LABEL] CTRL+L Set the volume label of the current drive. This will also work across some networks. [PRINTING] P Print highlighted file ALT+P Setup print command CTRL+P Print directory listing/tagged files The CTRL+P command prints directly to the printer port selected in the configuration section. The P command uses a user defined print command line which set using ALT+P This may seem strange but it gives alot more flexability to the user allowing the use of third party printing utilties. [QUIT] ALT+Q Quit. Exit from QD3 to the current operating system. I.e. DOS [RENAMING FILES] R Rename highlighted file CTRL+R Rename tagged files A user definable picklist of filespecs for renaming multiple files is available by pressing the UP arrow. [SORTING] S Sort current window ALT+S Sort other window Sorts the filename in a window by either Name, Extension, Size, Date, Program or Tag Sorting by program puts .BAT, .COM and .EXE files first following by the rest in extension order. Sorting by tag puts all tagged files first in name order. [DISK SPACE] CTRL+S Show disk status This command shows the status of current drive. Information includes drive type, size, bytes used, bytes available, volume label, serial number, smartdrv cache status and network status. This information can also be obtained from the disk information section by pressing ALT+I [TAGGING FILES] - Tag command T - Tag all files CTRL+T - Tag files by wildcard ALT+T - Untag all files CTRL+U - Untag files by wildcard ALT+U - Tag all files & directories CTRL+ALT+T - UnTag all files & directories CTRL+ALT+U - Reverse file tags ALT+R - Reverse file & directory tags CTRL+ALT+R [VIEWING FILES] V View highlighted file ALT+V Setup view command [EXECUTING COMMANDS] ENTER Execute the current file with no parameters X Execute the current file with parameters ALT+X Execute user command CTRL+X Execute the current file in the other window H Pick from a list of executed commands Execute multiple commands by seperating each command with a semi-colon. ie DIR /W;PAUSE Executed commands are stored and can be recalled by pressing the up arrow while editing a command or by using the history command (H). #CTRL+X Explained,CTRL+X EXPLAINED [CTRL+X EXPLAINED] CTRL+X is useful for running a program from another directory in the current directory. For example, you could change to the C:\BMP directory with all your bitmap files in one window, change to the C:\VPIC directory in the other window with your viewing utility, locate the VPIC.EXE file and press CTRL+X This has the effect of logging onto the C:\BMP directory and typing the command C:\VPIC\VPIC.EXE The success of this function will depend on the particular viewing utility that you use. [CONFIGURATION] ALT+C Configuration or INSTALL.EXE #General Options,GENERAL OPTIONS #Copy Options,COPY OPTIONS #Menu Options,MENU OPTIONS #Archive Options,ARCHIVE OPTIONS #Sound Options,SOUND OPTIONS #Security Options,SECURITY OPTIONS #Registration,REGISTRATION #Colour Setup,COLOURS #Utilities,UTILITIES [GENERAL OPTIONS] CONFIGURATION ( ALT+C ) #Screen Saver Delay,SCREEN SAVER DELAY #Screen Saver Command,SCREEN SAVER COMMAND #Default Sort Order,DEFAULT SORT ORDER #Swap floppy drives,SWAP FLOPPY DRIVES #CRC Check,CRC CHECK #Default printer port,DEFAULT PRINTER PORT #Pause After Execution,PAUSE AFTER EXECUTION #Pause After Copy,PAUSE AFTER COPY #Enhanced Keyboard,ENHANCED KEYBOARD #Mouse Support,MOUSE SUPPORT #Multiple File Editing,MULTIPLE FILE EDITING [SCREEN SAVER DELAY] CONFIGURATION ( ALT+C ) Screen Saver Delay in seconds. Enter the number of seconds QD3 should wait before activating the screen saver. Enter zero or leave blank to disable the screen saver. Mouse users, there is a screen saver hot spot in the top right hand corner of the screen. Placing the mouse cursor here activates the screen saver instantly. There is also a cold spot in the top left hand corner. Leaving the mouse cursor here prevents the screen saver from activating. [SCREEN SAVER COMMAND] CONFIGURATION ( ALT+C ) Screen Saver Command This is the command line that QD3 executes as a screen saver. You may enter any valid DOS command here to act as a screen saver. Only use applications that continue running until if keyboard or mouse event occurs or else QD3 will sit there running the command over and over again. Delete any existing entry to enable the internal screen saver. This is the safest option if your not sure. Example command line to play an .FLI animation C:\AAT\AAPLAY C:\AAT\MYDEMO.FLI [DEFAULT SORT ORDER] CONFIGURATION ( ALT+C ) Default Sort Order This is the sort order that QD3 assumes for both windows when you first start the program. You can change the sort order at any time of coursr by pressing S or ALT+S #Sorting,SORTING [SWAP FLOPPY DRIVES] CONFIGURATION ( ALT+C ) Swap floppy drives Some motherboards allow you to swap drive A: and B: in the BIOS. This feature allows compatibility with these motherboards. [CRC CHECK] CONFIGURATION ( ALT+C ) CRC Check QD3 can perform a CRC ( Cyclic Redundancy Check ) on the QD3MAIN.EXE which may help identify hard disk corruption or possible virus infection. The check can be configured three ways: NO - No CRC check at all YES - CRC check every time QD3MAIN is executed STARTUP - CRC check only on initial program startup [DEFAULT PRINTER PORT] CONFIGURATION ( ALT+C ) Default printer port This is the port QD3 uses for internal printing such as directory lists. Valid ports are: LPT1: LPT2: LPT3: or LPT4: [PAUSE AFTER EXECUTION] CONFIGURATION ( ALT+C ) Pause After Execution Although you can use the B key to view any background DOS screen after exectuing a command it may be more convenient to have a pause before returning to QD3 This will enable such a pause and you will be promted with *any key* at the bottom right of the screen after executing any command including the configuration utility ( ALT+C ) [PAUSE AFTER COPY] CONFIGURATION ( ALT+C ) Pause After Copy This will cause QD3 to pause after any copy, move, delete or rename operation so you can see the results before continuing. [ENHANCED KEYBOARD] CONFIGURATION ( ALT+C ) Enhanced Keyboard A 101 key enhanced keyboard is prefered for use with QD3 and most computers are equiped with one. If you have an older keyboard the AUTO option should detect the keyboard type automatically so you should only need to change this if you are having keyboard problems. An enhanced keyboard allows extra keyboard command options such as the function keys F11 and F12 as well as a wider range of CTRL, ALT and SHIFT key combinations. [MOUSE SUPPORT] CONFIGURATION ( ALT+C ) Mouse Support If you have a compatible mouse driver installed the AUTO option should detect this and you can use your mouse with QD3. If you do not wish to use a mouse with QD3 disable this option as it will speed up the load time of QD3 by about half a second. This is the time it takes to identify and initialize the mouse driver. [MULTIPLE FILE EDITING] CONFIGURATION ( ALT+C ) Multiple File Editing If your editor supports multiple file editing, such as the Windows 95 EDIT.COM program, enabling this option allows you to tag up to nine files and load them all into the editor at once. [COPY OPTIONS] CONFIGURATION ( ALT+C ) #Copy Mode,COPY MODE #Auto Untag,AUTO UNTAG #Ovewrite mode,OVERWRITE MODE #Confirm mode,CONFIRM MODE #Count Files When Tagged,COUNT FILES WHEN TAGGED [COPY MODE] CONFIGURATION ( ALT+C ) Copy Mode MODE 1 uses a faster copy routine for individual files and the DOS XCOPY command for copying directories. MODE 2 is the fastest for copying multiple directories. CAUTION: XCOPY does not copy hidden files! MODE 2 uses the same copy routine as MODE 1 for all files including directories and hidden files. This mode is not quite as fast but it does enable you to monitor it's progress with a status bar and statistics including Copied, Skipped and Overwritten files. If you are working with floppy disks frequently use MODE 2 rather than MODE 3 MODE 3 uses a built in copy routine that although slower, does allow you to monitor the progress for each file and also allows you to abort a copy in the middle of a file. [AUTO UNTAG] CONFIGURATION ( ALT+C ) Auto Untag This option untags files as they are copied. This means that if the copy process is interuppted for any reason, you can see which files were not copied. In some circumstances you may wish to leave the files tagged so that you can do something else with them. [OVERWRITE MODE] CONFIGURATION ( ALT+C ) Ovewrite mode This option decides whether or not existing files will be overwritten during a copy, move or rename process Available modes are: PROMPT before ovewriting files ALWAYS overwrite files NEVER overwrite files Overwrite NEWER files only If you're not sure, select the PROMPT mode. [CONFIRM MODE] CONFIGURATION ( ALT+C ) Confirm mode This option determines whether QD3 prompts for confirmation before deleting files or copying files to and from archives. If you're not sure, leave this option enabled otherwise you may find it a bit too easy to delete files. Note, this does not affect the overwrite mode. [COUNT FILES WHEN TAGGED] CONFIGURATION ( ALT+C ) Count Files When Tagged This option will count all the files in a directory, including sub-directories, when a directory is tagged. This is useful when you are copying or pruning multiple directories so you can see how many bytes you are dealing with. It can slow you down however so only enable this option if you really need the information. Note: You can obtain the same information for a single directory using the A (attributes) command. [MENU OPTIONS] CONFIGURATION ( ALT+C ) #Auto Menus,AUTO MENUS #Default Menu Page,DEFAULT MENU PAGE #Select page on entry,SELECT PAGE ON ENTRY [AUTO MENUS] CONFIGURATION ( ALT+C ) Auto Menus The menu is usually activated by pressing F10 but when this option is enabled the menu will appear first when QD3 is started. Note: If a supervisor password has been entered in the security options section, the menu will appear first regardless of the Auto Menus setting. [DEFAULT MENU PAGE] CONFIGURATION ( ALT+C ) Default menu page This option allows you to specify which menu page appears when the menu first appears. Note: You cannot select a default menu page that has been password protected. [SELECT PAGE ON ENTRY] CONFIGURATION ( ALT+C ) Select page on entry This option allows you to select the menu page when the menu first appears instead of going straight to any one page. This is useful when you have setup several pages of equal importance. [SOUND OPTIONS] CONFIGURATION ( ALT+C ) #Sounds Enabled,SOUNDS ENABLED #Sounds Command,SOUNDS COMMAND #Select sound effects,SELECT SOUND EFFECTS [SOUNDS ENABLED] CONFIGURATION ( ALT+C ) This option allows you to enabled or disable sound effects in QD3. There is also an AUTO option which will enable sound effects only when QD3 is not being run under Windows as this can cause problems. [SOUNDS COMMAND] CONFIGURATION ( ALT+C ) This is the command used to play the various sounds effects files. Examples: %QPCPLAY Use the PCPLAY program in the QD3 directory to play the file through the PC speaker. %QPLAYFILE Use the PLAYFILE program in the QD3 directory to play the file through your sound card if you have one. C:\SB16\SBPLAY Use the SBPLAY program in the SB16 directory to play the file through your Sound Blaster 16 sound card. [SELECT SOUND EFFECTS] CONFIGURATION ( ALT+C ) This section allows you to select different sound effects. Sound effect files are stored in a sub-directory of QD3 called SOUNDS. You can press F3 to browse through this directory and select a suitable sound effects file. You can also copy your own sound effect files to this directory and use them in QD3 Delete any existing entry (CTRL-Y) to select INTERNAL BEEPER or NO SOUND [SECURITY OPTIONS] CONFIGURATION ( ALT+C ) Security options simply allows you to enter a supervisor password. When a password is entered, QD3 always starts with the menu first and you cannot exit from the menu without entering the password. Also, you cannot enter the configuration menu or run INSTALL without entering the password. [REGISTRATION] CONFIGURATION ( ALT+C ) Print the file REGISTER.TXT for information on how to register QD3. The file also contains a registration form for you to fill in. [COLOURS] CONFIGURATION ( ALT+C ) This section allows you to modify the colours used in QD3 or reset them back to the default colours. [ARCHIVE OPTIONS] This section allows you to select the default archiving utility and specify direct command lines to the archiving programs. You will need to set these if the programs are not in a directory listed on your PATH statement in order for QD3 to find and use them. The AUTO CONFIGURATION option in the utilities menu should find all of these programs for you under normal circumstances. These settings must be correct or the archive functions will not work. Also note that these settings do not affect any archiving associations. You will need to configure those manually. [UTILITIES] #Create Install Disk,CREATE INSTALL DISK #Re-create QD.BAT,RECREATE QD.BAT #Backup Configuration Files,BACKUP/RESTORE CONFIG #Restore Configuration Files,BACKUP/RESTORE CONFIG #Add starup files to AUTOEXEC.BAT,ADD/REMOVE STARTUP #Remove starup files from AUTOEXEC.BAT,ADD/REMOVE STARTUP #Auto Configuration,AUTO CONFIG #Restore default configuration,RESTORE DEFAULT #Make current configuration default,MAKE CONFIGURATION DEFAULT #Make current menu setup default,MAKE MENU DEFAULT [RESTORE DEFAULT] This option will erase your current settings and restore the default configuration. All the configuration options will be reset to their default values. Use this option only if your current configuration is not working properly or to undo changes you have made to the original configuration. [MAKE CONFIGURATION DEFAULT] * NOTE: FOR USE BY DISTRIBUTORS ONLY * This option will replace the default configuration file with the current settings. This should be used with caution as it will affect any further installations made from the program and you should make sure you have a copy of the original file before you start. It is preferrable to make changes to the default settings by editing the $QD3.CFG file manually. However, if you have many changes that you wish to make it may be easier to set up the installed program to your specifications then execute this menu option to overwrite the $QD3.CFG file. [MAKE MENU DEFAULT] * NOTE: FOR USE BY DISTRIBUTORS ONLY * This option will create a default menu file $QD3.MNU with the current menu setup. This file does not exist on the original distribution version as QD3 creates a new empty menu file by default. Use this option if you wish to setup a standard default menu file for your customers. ( QD3.MNU and $QD3.MNU cannot be modifed manually ) [CREATE INSTALL DISK] This option will copy the QD3 program files onto a floppy disk complete with an installation program. The disk can then be distributed as a shareware version of QD3. The effect is the same as making a diskcopy of the original install disk. If you own a registered version of QD3 your registration number will NOT be transferred onto the disk so you are free to make as many install disks as you like and give them to your friends. #Customized Installation,CUSTOMIZING INSTALL [CUSTOMIZING INSTALL] * THIS SECTION IS FOR EXPERIENCED USERS WHO * * WISH TO MODIFY THE QD3 INSTALLATION PROCESS * You can customize QD3 installations by making changes to the following files: #INSTALL.DAT,INSTALL.DAT #EXTRA.DAT,EXTRA.DAT #$QD3.CFG,$QD3.CFG #$QD3.MNU,$QD3.MNU [INSTALL.DAT] This file contains the filenames of the program and data files that the install program transfers during an installation. You may edit this file but I would prefer you to make your changes in the EXTRA.DAT file if possible just to keep them seperate from the standard installation. [EXTRA.DAT] This file contains additional filenames that the install program transfers during an installation. I would prefer you to make any changes to this file rather than the INSTALL.DAT file just to keep them seperate from the standard installation. [$QD3.CFG] This file contains the default configuration data that is used in a new installation. You can edit this file to customize the default configuration. Note that when a user is upgrading from a previous version of QD3, their existing configuration files are left intact to preserve thier own setup. [$QD3.MNU] This file contains the default menu data used in a new installation. This file is not included on the original installation as QD3 creates an empty menu data file the first time it is used. The file CANNOT be modified manually as it is not saved in text format. To customize a default menu file, first backup your current configuration and then modify the menu though normal program use. When you are satisfied with the menu setup, copy the QD3.MNU file to $QD3.MNU [RECREATE QD.BAT] This option will re-create the startup file QD.BAT You may have to do this if the QD.BAT file becomes corrupt. The file can also be re-created by running QD3MAIN.EXE from the DOS prompt. If you elect to have QD3 modify your startup files, the first of the two commands added to AUTOEXEC.BAT will do this for you every time you start your computer. [BACKUP/RESTORE CONFIG] This option allows you to backup and restore the QD3 configuration files. You can select either a quick backup which simply makes copies of the files in the QD3 directory or you can backup to a floppy disk. [ADD/REMOVE STARTUP] This section will add or remove two lines from your AUTOEXEC.BAT file to make QD3 start automatically when you start your computer. The first line re-creates the QD.BAT file in case it has been deleted or corrupted and the second line starts QD3 [AUTO CONFIG] This option will search along the DOS PATH to locate several utilities used by QD3 for editing text files and archiving. If found, QD3 will automatically update the configuration files to point correctly to these programs. #Additional files needed for QD3,ADDITIONAL FILES [CALCULATOR] The calculator ( ALT+K ) allows you to perform simple calculations. It can also be used to convert between decimal, hex, binary and ASCII formats up to 255 [SECURING] You can protect individual directories on your system by changing into a directory ( including the root directory ) and pressing CTRL+ALT+S. Once a directory is secured you cannot use QD3 to delete files or copy files to that directory. To unsecure a directory, press CTRL+ALT+S again. You can also include sub-directories to secure the whole branch then un-secure specific sub-directories as needed. [WINDOWS] When running QD3 under Microsoft Windows 3.1 or 3.11 you may encounter a problem when sound effects are enabled. If you wish to use QD3 under Windows, either disable sound effects in the sound configuration section of QD3 or use the NOSOUND parameter on the command line. This will disable all sounds effects regardless of the sound configuration setting. Windows 95 does not have the same problem with DOS applications using the sound card but there are other considerations. As from version 3.70, QD3 has limited support for Windows 95 long filenames. See README95.TXT for details. An icon is installed with the program called QD3.ICO [DIRECTORY LISTS] QD3 works on a dual directory list system. Most operations only require you to locate the source in one list and the target in the other. Keep pressing the I key until you get the mode that you find most useful. [STARTING QD3] 1. QD3 must be started from QD.BAT 2. If QD.BAT does not exist, run QD3MAIN and it will make a new one. 3. QD3.BAT is another batch file which can be moved to your UTILS or any directory listed in PATH to start QD3 from anywhere. 4. If QD3.BAT doesn't work try the following: C: Change to drive C: CD\QD3 Change to QD3 directory QD3MAIN Re-create QD.BAT file QD Start QD3 5. If you still have problems, try re-installing the program from the original floppy disk. [RUNNING APPLICATIONS] If you have trouble running applications from QD3 the problem is probably in the command itself. If the problem is with an association, menu command or command execution (X, ALT X) check things like parameter syntax especially with %M %U %I etc Remember to press B to see any DOS error messages after a command has been executed. [TROUBLE COPYING FILES] If you are having trouble copying files, first check that the FILES statement in your CONFIG.SYS file is set to at least 10. If this is OK try copying the file through DOS. If it doesn't work through DOS you probably have a bad disk or a damaged file. If it does work through DOS it should work through QD3, try changing the copy mode. If it still doesn't work let me know. [QD3 DISTRIBUTION] You can give shareware copies of QD3 to all your friends. Do this is one of two ways: 1. Make a DISKCOPY of the original QD3 install disk. 2. Create a new install disk by typing INSTALL A: or INSTALL B: from the QD3 directory or run INSTALL ( ALT+C ) and under the UTILITIES menu select CREATE INSTALL DISK QD3 should fit on a 720K floppy disk but a 1.2MB or 1.44MB disk is preferred. If you have customised your QD3 configuration and would like to use this on your INSTALL disk see the following sections: #Create Install Disk,CREATE INSTALL DISK #Customized Installation,CUSTOMIZING INSTALLATION [RUNNING QD3 UNDER WINDOWS] If QD3 crashes when you run it from Windows it is probably due to QD3 attempting to play a sound effect. Windows doesn't seem to like DOS programs using the sound card. Any of the following solutions should fix this, select the one which best suits you needs: 1. Disable sound effects in configuration. 2. Select AUTO which will disable sounds if QD3 detects that it's running under Windows. 3. Add the NOSOUND parameter to the command line in the properties for your QD3 program item. This will disable the sound effects regardless of the configuration setting. NOTE: This problem should not apply to Windows 95 [TROUBLE WITH SYSTEM INFORMATION] System information does not recognise the game port on some systems. I don't know why! System information does not display the Windows version unless you are running QD3 under Windows. [TROUBLE WITH COMPRESSED FILES] If you cannot open a compressed file, the file is either corrupt or QD3 simply doesn't support the format or version. Be aware of this when new versions of compression software are released. If you can open a compressed file but cannot copy files to it, from it or delete files from it you probably don't have the necessary compression utilities available on your system. If the above works but you have problems using an association with a compressed file, the problem is probably in the associated command. Press CTRL+ENTER on the compressed file and check the association. Note: You will need a reasonable understanding of compression utilities to fix association problems. [FILES] The following is list of files that you should find in your QD3 directory. Below that is a list of additional files that are required by some functions. Program files QD3.BAT Batch file to start QD3 - This file can be copied to your UTILS directory or any other directory listed on your PATH QD.BAT Batch file required to run QD3 QD3MAIN.EXE Main QD3 executable file QD3HELP.EXE QD3 help program / online manual QD3HELP.HLP Data for help program INSTALL.EXE Install/Setup/Configuration program INSTALL.DAT Data file for installation program EXTRA.DAT Data file for custom installations QD3.ICO QD3 icon for windows Configuration files QD3.CFG Configuration data file $QD3.CFG Default configuration data file QD3.CF$ Backup of configuration data file QD3.MNU User menu data file $QD3.MNU Default user menu data file QD3.MN$ Backup of menu data file QD3HOT.KEY Menu hotkeys data file QDTREE-C.TRE Directory tree data, one QDTREE-D.TRE for each available drive Document and help files HINTS.TXT Performance tips REGISTER.TXT Registration information README.TXT About QD3 UPDATE.TXT Changes in this version #Additional Files,ADDITIONAL FILES [ADDITIONAL FILES] Some QD3 functions require additional software. The INSTALL program looks for these utilities along your DOS PATH and notifies you if it cannot find any of them. QD3 will still work if you don't have these files but some features will not be available. ARCHIVING Archive manipulation, including copying files to and from archives, deleting files from archives and creating new archives require that the following programs are available through the DOS PATH .ARJ files require ARJ.EXE .LZH files require LHA.EXE ( sometimes called LHARC.EXE ) .ZIP files require PKZIP.EXE and PKUNZIP.EXE See the help on archive handling for more information VIEW/EDIT/PRINT There are several very good shareware and public domain viewers and editors around so QD3 has been written to take advantage of these. Press ALT+V to setup a viewer. Press ALT+E to setup an editor. The printer can be set up to use the DOS PRINT command or you can use it as a second viewer/editor or anything you like basically. Press ALT+P to setup a print command. Advanced users can use %M to setup a pick list of editors, viewers and printers. [INTRODUCTION] QD3 is essentially a hard disk management utility with similarities to Microsoft Windows File Manager, Norton Commander and XTree Gold. I have basically tried to combine the best features of all of these program and add a few of my own. The program can be configured so that a novice can use it simply to start applications and an experienced user can utilise the full power to perform complicated tasks quickly and easily. For more information refer to the topics below #Basic Features,BASIC FEATURES #Advanced features,ADVANCED FEATURES [BASIC FEATURES] The following is a quick summary of the basic features of QD3 * All the basic commands COPY/DELETE/MOVE etc use a single key All tagged file operations use CTRL+key ( When files are tagged, many commands give the option to operate on the highlighted file OR tagged files. ) * Copy, Move or Prune entire directory trees. * Move files or entire directory trees across drives. * Copy, Move, Rename or Delete all files including Hidden, System, and Read Only files and directories. * Change file attributes including the time and date. * Sort file lists by Name, Extension, Size, Date, Program, Tags ( Program - BAT, COM and EXE files first ) ( Tags - Tagged files first ) * Manipulate archives. QD3 treats archives just like directories. You can delete files in the archive and copy files to and from archives. No more complicated command lines. * QDTREE allows you to view your entire directory tree in a graphical format. Speed search the directory you want and press ENTER to go to it. * GOTO any directory on any drive. Just type the first few letters and press ENTER. * Compare differences between two file lists. QD3 tags files which are different so you can copy, delete or do whatever you want with them. * A global function allows you to manipulate files across drives and directories as one operation. * A simple format function let's you format floppy disks without having to type complicated DOS commands. * All floppy drive types and CDROM's are identifed so you know exactly which drive your looking at, including 2.88MB * A menu with 10 pages of 26 menu items each allows fast access to a maximum of 260 applications. * Easy menu setup. QD3 has one of the simplest menu setup procedures your ever likely to see. * Menu hotkeys provide faster access to menu applications. 46 hotkey combinations: F1 to F12 SHIFT F1 to F12 CTRL F1 to F12 ALT F1 to F12 excluding F1 (Help) and F10 (Menu) * Create batch files from tagged files. * Total system information including: - Drive capacity, space used/available - Smartdrv Read/Write cache status and version - DOS version - Windows version ( if running ) - Conventional/Extended/Expanded memory - Processor/CoProcessor type - Mouse type and driver version - PATH and other environment variables * Change disk volume labels #Advanced features,ADVANCED FEATURES [ADVANCED FEATURES] Windows users may have used assocations in File Manager. Associations allow you to link certain file types with a particular application. QD3 takes associations several steps further. In the simplest form, associations mean you can hit ENTER on a .DOC file and QD3 loads your Wordprocessor. Experienced users will find QD3 associations extremely powerful with the use of things like menu's and user parameters. Beginners should probably skip this feature for now. #Associations,ASSOCIATIONS [ASSOCIATIONS] The following parameters can be used in associations, command lines (X, ALT+X) and menu commands. Basic parameters %F Filename.Ext ie MYFILE.DOC %N Filename ie MYFILE %E Ext ie .DOC %D Drive ie C: %P Path ie \DOS\TEMP %A Full filespec ie C:\TEMP\MYFILE.DOC %O Other drive\path ie D:\WORK %W Windows 95 Long Filename.Extension Advanced parameters %L Log drive %L[F|H|C|A]: %U User %U[#L][Prompt?][Default] %M Menu %MTitle[Title1?Option1,Title2?Option2] %S Shell - Fast execute ie %SPLAYVOC %F %I Menuitem %ICG - Execute menu item G on page C #Log parameter,%LOG #User parameter,%USER #Menu parameter,%MENU #Shell parameter,%SHELL [%LOG] Log parameter ( %L ) Allows the user to select a drive letter. Optional paramters after %L can include any combination of: A - All drives (default) F - Floppy drives only H - Hard drives only ( including networked drives ) C - CDROM drives only %L is usually followed by a colon : Examples: SCAN %L: Select any drive to virus scan FORMAT %LF: Select floppy drive to format COPY %F %LH:\TEMP Select hard disk drive to copy to [%USER] User parameter ( %U ) %U[#L][Prompt?][Default!] Prompts the user to enter a value such as a filename or directory path or some other parameter. #L = maximum no. of characters in parameter ( If L = 1 then the user does not have to press ENTER, QD3 will accept the first key pressed. ) Prompt? = Prompt to tell the user what sort of information is required. Must end with ? Default! = Default response. Must end with ! Example: SETVOL %UVolume?15! #Examples of %U,Examples of %U [%MENU] Menus ( %M ) Menu's give the user the ability to choose from a list of options. For example, you may have a number of programs for playing sound files so you could set up a menu to select which program you wish to use to play the sound file. ie %M[PLAYVOC,VOCPLAY,SBPLAY] %F [%SHELL] Fast execute/Shell ( %S ) Normally, QD3 uses no memory at all because it uses a batch file to run itself, run the application, then loop back and run itself again. Sometimes though, this process is not quick enough, such as viewing files, playing sound files etc. In this case put a %S in front of the command line and QD3 will execute the command directly while QD3 is still in memory. This only works for small programs as QD3 uses around 300K in this mode. [Examples of %U] Command : SCAN %U Result : User enters the drive letter B: SCAN B: Command : SCAN %U[Drive?][A:] Result : User enters the drive letter as above or just hits ENTER to select the default A: SCAN A: Command : SCAN %U#1[Drive?][A]: Result : User enters just a letter without the colon or hits ENTER to select the default A: SCAN A: [QDTREE] QDTree - Graphical Directory Tree QDTree is a graphical representation of your hard disk including every sub-directory on the drive. Use Qdtree to browse through your hard disk and see how your directories are organised. Start typing a directory name and speed search will find it or the closest match. QDTree is also used by the GOTO function. See below. #Goto Directory,GOTO [MENU] F10: Menu The menu consists of ten pages, each page holds 26 menu items giving a total of 260 totally user definable options. Use the PGUP/PGDN keys to switch between menu pages or press SPACE to select a page from a pick list. Press F10 in the menu to modify the menu. An easy way to set up menu items is to locate the required programs executable file through the normal QD3 windows and press ALT+M QD3 will then ask you which menu page to store the new program and allow you to edit the parameters before saving the menu item. To run programs from the menu, either highlight the menu item and press ENTER, or press the letter next to the menu item (A to Z). You can also define a hot key for each menu item from the list below. This enables you to execute menu items directly from the QD3 windows. Available hotkeys are: F2 .. F9 ( Note: F1 and F10 are reserved. ) SHIFT+F1 .. SHIFT+F10 ALT+F1 .. ALT+F10 CTRL+F1 .. CTRL+F10 Another way to run a menu command without going into the menu is to use the %I parameter. This is particulaly usefull when creating batch files (CTRL+B) ie %ICG will execute menu item G on page C Individual menu items can be saved onto a floppy disk for backup purposes or to transfer to another machine. Press F10 from the menu and select "Save menu item to disk" or "Load menu item from disk". [ARCHIVING] Archive/Compressed file support QD3 can read the following archive formats into a directory list. Simply highlight the archive and press O to open it. Format Tested Versions ------- --------------- ARJ 2.30 2.39a 2.41 2.50a LHArc 1.13 2.10 2.13 PAK 2.51 PKARC 3.5 PKZIP 2.04c ZOO QD3 can also create, copy files to and from and delete files from the following archive formats. Format Tested Versions ------- --------------- ARJ 2.30 2.39a 2.41 2.50a LHArc 1.13 2.10 2.13 PKZIP 2.04c QD3 does not fully support LHArc 1.13 as I have not found a way to pipe a list of files to this version. 2.10 and 2.13 are fine. Other versions may also work but I have not tested them, please let me know what success you have. Support for other formats may be added later. #Archive Commands,ARCHIVE COMMANDS [ARCHIVE COMMANDS] Commands for manipulating archives #Create archive,CREATE ARCHIVE #Open an archive,OPEN ARCHIVE #Adding files to an archive,ADD TO ARCHIVE #Deleting files from an archive,DELETING FROM ARCHIVE #Extracting files from an archive,EXTRACT FROM ARCHIVE [CREATE ARCHIVE] To create an archive, tag the files/directories that you wish to compress and press CTRL+O If you want to archive an entire directory you can just change into that directory and press CTRL+O without tagging any files. QD3 will ask you for a name for the archive with the default name being the current directory name. If you don't add a file extension such as ARJ, LZH or ZIP, QD3 will ask you what type of archive you wish to create. QD3 will then ask a few more questions depending on what type of archive you have selected before creating the archive. The questions may include: #Create Multiple Volume ARJ?,MULTIPLE VOLUME ARJ #Span ZIP across disks?,SPANNED ZIP #Create self extracting archive?,SELF EXTRACTING ARCHIVE #Include sub-directories?,ARCHIVE WITH SUB-DIRECTORIES [MULTIPLE VOLUME ARJ] ARJ has the ability to create archives in multiple volumes of a fixed size. This is usefull for large archives ( over 1.44MB) that would not otherwise fit on a floppy disk. This feature allows you to create multiple volumes that can be copied onto seperate disks. I.e. MYARC.ARJ 1,440,000 bytes ( Disk 1 ) MYARC.A01 1,440,000 bytes ( Disk 2 ) MYARC.A02 225,000 bytes ( Disk 3 ) [SPANNED ZIP] PKZIP has the ability to SPAN an archive across multiple floppy disks. When asked for the name of the archive you must designate either A: or B: in front of the filename if this option is to be used. PKZIP will then create the archive and ask for a new disk as each is filled. [SELF EXTRACTING ARCHIVE] ARJ, PKZIP and LHArc all have the ability to create self extracting archives. These are compressed files with an EXE extension. When the file is executed from DOS it extracts itself to the current directory. This is useful if the archive is to be used on a computer that does not have ARJ, PKUNZIP or LHArc installed. [ARCHIVE WITH SUB-DIRECTORIES] If you tag a directory for addition to an archive, QD3 will automatically include and sub-directories under that directory. However, if you are creating an archive by pressing CTRL+O without tagging any files, you may or may not wish to include any sub-directories. Just answer yes or no as required. [OPEN ARCHIVE] QD3 is able to open and read several types of archives. Pressing O on a supported archive causes QD3 to read in the contents and display them in a normal directory window. You can then copy and deleted files to and from the archive is if it was a normal sub-directory. [ADD TO ARCHIVE] To add files to an existing archive, Open the archive and use the Copy command to add files to it like a normal copy operation. QD3 will use the appropriate compression utility to perform the archive manipulation. [EXTRACT FROM ARCHIVE] To extract files from an archive, Open the archive and highlight the file or tag the files you wish to extract and use the Copy command as normal. QD3 will use the appropriate compression utility to perform the archive manipulation. If you wish to extract all the files in an archive, an easier method is to use the Copy command as if it were a normal file and QD3 will ask you whether you want to copy the archive or extract it to the target directory. [DELETING FROM ARCHIVE] To delete files from an archive, Open the archive and highlight the file or tag the files you wish to delete and use the Delete command as normal. QD3 will use the appropriate compression utility to perform the archive manipulation. [MOUSE SUPPORT] Mouse support can be enabled/disabled in the general options section of configuration. The mouse can be used in QD3 as follows. Click once with either button on a file or directory to select it. Click again with the left button to execute the file or change directory. Click with the right button to activate a short menu of commands such as copy and delete. Click with the left button at the head or foot of a directory window to scroll up or down one page. Click with the right button to scroll up or down one line. [CATALOGUE OPTIONS] Catalogue options ( ALT+O ) are special options providing access to the CATalogue program by the same author. CATalogue is a database program designed for optimizing floppy disk storage. The CATalogue program is not part of QD3 although future versions may include a built in catalogue database. The CATalogue program must be installed before these options can function. These options simply provide easier access to the most common functions of the CATalogue program. The options include: #List files in catalogue,LIST FILES IN CATALOGUE #Copy files to catalogue,COPY FILES TO CATALOGUE #Compress files to catalogue,COMPRESS FILES TO CATALOGUE [LIST FILES IN CATALOGUE] This option simply calls the CATalogue program which then displays the current database contents. This is the same as typing CAT at the DOS prompt. Refer to the CATalogue help file for more information and advanced listing methods. [COPY FILES TO CATALOGUE] This is the same as the CAT C command with the added advantage that you can tag pre-compressed files, rather than listing them on the command line, and copy them into the catalogue. Refer to the CATalogue help file for more information and other CATalogue functions. [COMPRESS FILES TO CATALOGUE] This is the same as the CAT O command with the added advantage that you can tag files and/or directories, rather than listing them on the command line, and compress them into an archive in the catalogue. Refer to the CATalogue help file for more information and other CATalogue functions. [COMMON QUESTIONS] Common questions and answers about QD3 Q. Will there be a Windows version of QD3 A. The current version of QD3 works well under Windows 3.1, Windows for Workgroups 3.11 and Windows 95. There will probably not be a version for Windows 3.1 or 3.11 but I can see a need for a Windows 95 version to support long filenames and 32bit speed so I am looking into the possibilites. Q. Can I use CTRL+B to make normal batch files. A. No! CTRL+B is specifically for generating batch files with repeated commands for multiple tagged files. See the relavant help section for more information. Q. The file attributes say that a file is an archive but I cannot open it with the O command. A. The archive bit of a files attributes has nothing to do with compressed files or archives. The archive bit just means that this file is a copy of the original. Most files have this bit set beacause they have nearly always been copied from somewhere else. A true archive or commpressed files usually has one of the following extensions: .ARC .ARJ .LZH .PAK .ZIP .ZOO or sometimes .EXE for self extracting archives. [END] #END
