I changed the login to standard (rather than quick) and this seems to have done the trick, althought the startup is still a bit unstable, ie it doesn't always take the "start-in" directory properly and so it sometimes starts in the actual xtree directory which is inconvenient, but this is good enought for the moment. It's probably something I have done with the batch files.
Thanks to all those who replied. It it great to know that help is there when needed.
