Marc, for synchronization, where you want to manually control or visually review the process beforehand, side-by-side as you describe, try a program called "Beyond Compare". This is a shareware program written by Tim Thousand of Scooter Software at the link shown below.

This program is a GUI for Windows 9x and NT, and I like it a lot. It's also great for comparing, byte for byte, the contents of selected files or all files in two directory structures, or even two whole drives. Believe it or not, I've caught network copy errors, and even hard-drive-to-hard-drive copy errors with this program.

These are things XTree/ZTree can't do very well, or at all, (at least not yet, right Kim?).
