Exactly - Lots of folks, (including me), don't use the default colors.

I had thought if this, but didn't want to suggest YET ANOTHER color scheme, and it seems opposite of what XTree did. But of all the alternatives, (besides using the Inactive color for the base path), I like this one the best, (i.e., make the subordinate portion the same color as the Branch files, leave the base portion as is).

The only problem I see with using the Inactive color and changing its default to white is that most existing users might still have their Inactive color set to bright black which doesn't show up well on the default blue frame background. Kim might need to include a special note about this lest these users complain that their base path display is hard to read.

In any case, Kim, how about trying one of these, then let's see what kind of reaction it gets.
