In Response To: Re: Detailed Navigation PROPOSAL - UPDATE (Walter Rassbach)

It turns out F4 may not be as "unused" as I thought, it is supposed to cycle through the "normal", CTRL, and ALT menus in both the directory and file/B/G/S windows/views, as an access feature to allow true ONE key usage (i.e., no shift, CTRL, ALT key combos). There is a bug here in version 1.40a (separately reported), but it probably has to be fixed...

This means that the proposed usage has to be modified somewhat. I see the following options (there may be others...):

1) Add a configuration option to enable/disable the enhanced navigation feature(s), WHICH WE MAY WANT ANYWAY... If disabled, F4 does the old thing while if enabled, it does the new... This is probably reasonable anyway since the navigation feature (old OR new) is not really usable in a "ONE finger" mode (since it requires a SHIFT key most of the time.

2) Put the navigation feature on the shift-F4 key instead. This may be desirable in any case (after all, most of navigation has the SHIFT key down anyway...), even in conjunction with method (1).

3) Put the new navigation feature on the F3 key (I picked the F4 key because the new feature was similar to what the ctrl-F4 and alt-F4 keys do in a file window, i.e., do a special display reduction selection...). The F3 key is supposed to be unused, but, in fact, it seems to do the same thing as an alt-F3, i.e., a re-log -- I'm not sure if this was intentional or if there are some small differences from the alt-F3 usage.

4) Move the "access" feature to the F3 key (it is not used in the directory window, and its usage in a file/B/G/S window is, as I said above, undocumented...), and use F4 for the new navigation feature.

The more I think about it the more I like the proposed feature I suggested for F4 (and, I do like that key for it), but we need to come up with a solution for this conflict... -- Walter
