New: XFile - Clone of which XTreeGold Version?

Thanks, Mathias, for this link to the new XFile clone.

I have to say that it's eXTremely ...mmm... interesting. (Slight pun intended) ;-)

XFile's visual replication of the XTreeGold/DOS screen in a Windows GUI is excellent. I only wish it's functional replication was as true to XTG, or better yet to ZTreeWin. ZTree has truly, and faithfully, embraced and extended the XTreeGold paradigm. For 32-bit XTree functionality, ZTW is the "Gold" standard. (Definite pun intended)

XFile has some nice features, like easily resizable small file windows and statistics windows, quick access to standard Windows folders and Control Panel applets, several built-in file viewers, thumbnail gallery for image files, and built-in ZIP and CAB support.

But rather than a "XTreeGold/DOS clone for Windows" this version 1.01 of XFile seems more like a clone of XTreeGold for Windows 4.0 (>http://www.xtreefanpage.org/x30vers.htm#XTGW4) in it's exciting Windows-GUI, but incomplete XTree, functionality.

No, XFile doesn't look like XTGW4 with all the buttons, tabs, and scrollbars and the embedded viewing window (>http://www.xtreefanpage.org/docs/xtgw4sc.gif), but it's the promise it represents. The promise of a "fast GUI" (not an oxymoron with today's CPUs), full-featured and keyboard-compatible, XTreeGold-style file manager.

XFile should continue to add more XTreeGOLD features to avoid repeating the disappointment of XTreeGold for Windows 4.0
