Started way back in 1985, did you?

I know the feeling.

Uh, I think you must mean XTreeGold 3.0, don't you? XTreePro only got up to 1.1 in 1988 before becoming XTreeProGold 1.3 in 1989.

There IS plenty to dislike about Windows, for sure. But there's a lot to like, too. Besides, you've still got DOS under Windows, and XTree works in both.

Well, almost. Actually XTreeGold 3.01 is the last "official" DOS version. See the versions list at >http://www.xtreefanpage.org/x30vers.htm

Yes, unfortunately, XTree ceased development and has gotten left behind.

> DID I READ CORRECTLY THAT THE WINDOW VERSION WAS NOT AS GOOD?

I know at least one person that preferred XTree for Windows 2.0 over the DOS versions. But we were both very disappointed in XTreeGold for Windows 4.0 which seemed to be a very poor combination of XTree for Windows 2.0 and XTreeGold 3.0 for DOS that didn't work as well as either one!

> PLEASE ADVISE.

I'd advise any fan of XTree to try ZTree, today's 32-bit text-mode successor to XTree. It does almost everything XTree did, plus a whole lot more, and it's still being developed and further improved today! Read about here at >http://www.xtreefanpage.org/x63clone.htm#ZTreeWin

ZTree takes advantage of modern operating systems and multi-mega-(even giga-)bytes of RAM to tame today's huge hard disks full of long file names and long directory name. But it doesn't work in DOS, the text-mode window just *looks* like DOS.

If you're an XTree fan and *IF* you can bring yourself to use Windows 9x, ME, 2000, or XP you'll feel at home using ZTreeWin. See the ZTreeWin Home Page at >http://www.ztree.com/html/ztreewin.htm to find out more and download a free fully functional trial copy.

Hope this helps.
