If you have XTreeGold FOR WINDOWS 4.0 there's a patch available that will make it show long file names, since it was developed to work with Win95. That's the only version I've heard of that does this. There are some people who still like the XTree for Windows versions.

I think more people still like the XTree for DOS versions, especially the last one, XTreeGold 3.01 which is still useful in Win98 and WinNT. If you have a DOS version calling itself 4.0 it's actually version 3 that has been hacked to say 4 and get circulated on the web that way.

All the XTree versions are no longer supported nor further developed by the current owner, Symantec Corp. Occasionally a copy shows up on some specialty store shelves, or re-sale sites.

There are lots of 32-bit XTree clones that do support long file names. The best, in many opinions is ZTree which most closely matches XTree with versions for Windows and OS/2. See HTTP://WWW.ZTREE.COM to download a free evaluation copy. At just $30 ZTreeWin is a real bargain and comes with unlimited e-mail support and frequent public beta versions for trying a constant flow of great new 32-bit functions. There's even a very helpful ZTreeWin Unofficial Homepage at with tips, tricks and the ZTreeWin Forum at for asking questions and suggesting new features.

That's one opinion.
