XTree Forum-Archive

I have only just found Jeff's site, this is a copy of the mail I just sent him:

Hi Jeff,

Just a brief note to say ‘Thank you’ for Xtree and all the later incarnations, and also to say ‘Sorry’ for your current situation.

I first came across Xtree in 1986, someone gave me a copy and I tracked down a supplier in the US and imported many copies which were snapped up by my customers. Then I started to sell Western Digital hard cards and Xtree was included with each one, now it was spreading far and wide!

I was devastated when Windows arrived and Xtree ceased to work properly – and devastated was not to strong a word! Xtree saved me hours of hard work – it made file transfer easy, I used it to copy hard disks – something that we did a lot of when preparing new computers and replacing broken hard drives. The hex editor made me a lot of money – I used it to modify ‘’ so that the copy command no longer worked (unless you knew it’s new name) which was a security feature a certain government department wanted, format was disabled, again unless you know the new syntax which I had modified.

For years I struggled without Xtree until one happy day I found Ztree. Now it is one of my most used utilities even in these days of winds, the search routine puts Microsoft’s offering to shame and the hex editor is still very useful.

Today I found your website by accident – I was at a customer’s site and needed a copy of Ztree and my USB drive wouldn’t work in the customer’s machine so I went on to the net get a copy of Ztree, mistyped and hey presto there you were!

May I sincerely wish you all the best for the future and again give you my sincere thanks for inspiring a replacement tool that is as essential to me as a screwdriver!

Many regards
